My wife and I are a Vietnamese-Korean couple. My wife just gave birth to a boy and we intend to register Vietnamese citizenship for him. In case my son falls into one of the cases eligible for change of given name, does he need to obtain parents’ consent and may he carry out procedures for legalizing such change by himself?

Specifically, the change of a minor child’s name, if permitted by law, will be carried out at the request of his parents who will jointly undersign a declaration form for change of their child’s name. Please note that the consent of both parents is required, even if they have divorced, and in case the child is aged between full nine years and under 18 years, he himself must give his consent for the change of his name in the declaration form. In case the child has reached the age of 18 and has full civil act capacity, he can carry out procedures for change of name by himself. So you may refer to the above regulations and check whether you and your wife need to sign the consent for your son to change his given name or he may carry out procedures for change of name by himself.-
